Working for a French Company

Hi there,

I am finding it increasingly difficult to adjust to the working conditions in France. I have worked as a commercial director for a family business for the last 7 years. We export around 75% and on the whole things are good. The business has grown since I have been here and there is more new business in the pipline. However, I find the MD cannot delegate. In fact he spends most of his time doing what I should be doing and not doing what the MD should do. Additionally all business trips are done together except if the country is not to his liking. This obviously doubles up the costs.

I was MD for a competitor running a company with double the turnover of the current company. Turnover and profits doubled in a market which only grew by 10%. This was part of the reason I was came into my present role.

Does anyone else have similar experiences working here. If tehre are jobs out there I am keen to look again.

Regards

toffeeman

i would think that given the present economic climate, if youve got a job like yours, hang onto it and grin and bear it

Absolutely! Agree with A Smith there.

Also, you say it is a family business - is the MD a member of that family? If that's the case, it's not very surprising if he sees the business as his 'baby' - it's what is called a paternalistic way of management which is not at all unusual in small companies, especially in more 'latin' countries like France, Italy, Spain etc.

If the MD is part of the family which owns the company, and the company is making profits and the workers are paid correctly, IMO I don't see why he shouldn't take the opportunity to visit countries that interest him. Business and work shouldn't just be about making as much money as possible, there should be enjoyment of what you do too. If the MD is just an employee and nothing to do with the family, or if it was a public company, that would be different. In those cases he shouldn't be spending money unnecessarily.

Congratulations on your success with the other company, but in the end, who are the profits for? As I see it, for those who make them (ie the workers), or for re-investing in the company.
