Can anyone advise if buildings insurance is a legal requirement, in other words compulsory, only my buildings insurance company has levied a penalty of 25 euros for not renewing with them.

Hi there a few yrs ago we got caught out like that.We decided not to re-new with exisiting insurance agency (axa) as our french neighbour recommended another that they used.

Because we failed to say we no longer required their services they assumed we would continue the next yr with them and they wrote to ask that we now settle our insurance fees for the yr.When we explained we were now with another agent they replied almost tough you didnt notify us we want our money-so for a few months we were paying double the amount.

So be warned you need to write to your insurers in good time-way before the new insurance is due.

Also if your buildings are not insured and something happens you will have no come back and no payout.

Insurance on your house is a legal requirement, for public liability as a minimum. So thats a YES to your question.

Things have changed a little now with regard to cancelling. Before, you had to give 2 months written notice by registered post to cancel the insurance 2 months before it became due.

Now, they send you the price of the renewal at least a month prior to the end, giving you the option to renew. But you still cant just not renew (as in UK), without notice.
