Travel and Health Insurance

I am having trouble sorting out what is needed for travelling here in France and what is needed when we go back to UK and if we travel to other countries.

At my local bank I have been told that a Gold Mastercard would cover all my needs but I am not convinced - the annual cost of the card would be €118. As I see it my Carte Vital would cover me in France health wise, my home insurance would cover me for the loss of anything and my car insurance would cover me for car related problems. But what if I travel to UK or Italy, Spain or maybe even America. When I lived in UK I travelled a lot and had an annual travel insurance that covered the world. Is this something that I should take out and if so can I get it from a French company or should I try a UK based one. I have seen in previous questions that AXA supply some sort of cover. Very grateful for views on this.

My wife is travelling over to UK on her own for 4 days and I want to make sure that she is covered.

Many thanks in anticipation

You need to get a European Medical Card (the old E111) from CPAM, this will cover you for medical treatment anywhere in the EU and Switzland (valid 12 months).

If you have breakdown cover with your French car insurance then this will cover you again in the EU (BUT PLEASE read the policy - cover will only be for a max of 30 days in most cases).

The bank card will cover you anywhere in the world if you use the card to make the bookings etc. The charge of 118€ to issue the card is a one off payment not an annual fee.

Travel insurance policies are available from any insurance agent or bank.

In all cases please read the policy document to ensure that the cover you need is actually covered.

We have travelled extensively in Europe, China, Vietnam, Egypt etc and the only time we have taken out insurances have been against cancellation.

As for health, your French EHIC card with your Carte Vitale should be perfectly adequate.

Like another poster says, even the car insurance covers you for accidents abroad, even if one goes without the car.

I guess for some people, insurances are very important to them, for others less so, it depends on the individual and their own circumstances.

Talk to your own insurance company and discuss your concerns on what cover is available. As for health cover, its a reciprical thing in most european countries, with your EHIC and CV.
