For the past few winters Maureen and Henry Douglass have spent three months of each year teaching in rural schools in the KwaZulu Natal Province of South Africa. Before these trips, neither of them had visited Southern Africa nor taught small children. They found out at first-hand about the people, their health and medical care, crime and the law, food, culture and wildlife. Their experiences, as the only Europeans living and working in a rural community in a developing country, have been many and varied. They never tire of sharing the sights and sounds of Africa. Angling is a great way to mix sport and learning. A superb place for lake and river fishing, Jugon les Lacs is sought after for its extensive, well-kept and regularly restocked network of lakes and rivers. Based at rue de Rond-ar-Roc'h and open all year round. This is one of the best salmon fishing rivers in Brittany. For trout fishermen there are 400km of category 1 waterways and more than 60km suitable for fly fishing. Open for salmon fishing from March to the end of July and September and October. Lanvallay has stood on the hill on the right bank of the Rance since the 6th century when it grew up around a hermitage. From 1000 AD, another township spread around the "Benedictine Priory of La Madeleine du Pont" (at the harbour). Things to see: the church (1844-46), the "Old Town" with 13th century houses, the site of the "Old River", former course of the Rance, also called "La Courbure", and the Vieux-Pont at the harbour (15th to 20th century). There are also panoramic views over Dinan.

Le Hingle is famous for granite working which was the main activity in the town from the 19th century up until the 1960s. Until 1800, it employed workers from the whole area. The Barrage du Guinefort dam is worth a visit.

One of the most important fortified sites of the Duchy of Brittany in the thirtheenth century. A rampart walk, staircases and a footbridge offer visitors lovely views over the Rance Valley, the old town and the historic Benedictine Abbey. Contact:02 96 87 69 70.

The town of Lehon is made up of one long street with several houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. To the west of Lehon can be seen the Saint-Esprit Calvary cross (15th century). There are also monuments such as the Royal Saint-Magloire Priory and the Chateau de Lehon, dating in part from the 13th century and comprising 8 towers which stand on St.-Joseph hill.

This group of seven small islands is the most important bird reserve in France, with over 20,000 pairs and 27 species. Open from February to November with boats leaving from Trestraou and Ploumanac'h.

Situated north-east of the town this forest is 6,250 acres of ideal walking terrain - no cycling or riding allowed, and is hole to large numbers of stags, roe-deer and wild boar.

Situated north-west of Lannion, this is a 750 acre forest with many walking, horse riding and cycling routes.

These wet-lands have water all year round, plentiful wildlife, a rich assortment of plants and vegetation and Camargue horses grazing the land.

The Chateau looks out over the valley, its gardens sloping down to the river. It is the last remaining evidence of the fortifications built from the 11th century. G.R.34. 5.5 km long, along by the sea, within the town limits. A magnificent walk going along the steep coastline which enables you to see both the coast and the amazing houses built at the beginning of the last century, such as "Kermoor", which is in an oriental style.

Starts from the Tourist Office ( 8 km, time taken: 2H30). you will take in the Moulin Saint-Michel (St Michael's Mill), with a magnificent panoramic view of Saint-Quay Portrieux and all the bay. Full details are available from the tourist office or a copy can be obtained from the web site.

From Port d'Armor to Le Portrieux. At the end of the fishing quay: A view of the St-Quay Islands and the Bay. Go along the Sentier des Douaniers (Customs Officers' Path) past the Comtesse beach and the Comtesse Island (which you can explore at low tide). Then you reach the Viking stele, which tells you about an important event in the history of the natives of St Quay-Portrieux. Viewpoint indicator at the Pointe du Sémaphore. Return along the Rue du Président Le Sénécal and the Boulevard Foch. Then explore the heart of the Le Portrieux quarter, going along the Rue du Commerce, the Rue des Lilas, the Passage des Lilas, see the Ste Anne Chapel, continuing along the Rue Ste Anne, the Rue Clemenceau, and finishing up at the Place du Centre. Finish with a short detour to the Parc du Port-es-Leu from where you have a good general view of the Saint-Quay-Portrieux ports. The pedestrian track brings you back to the Port d'Armor, going along by the beaching area and the Portrieux Beach. 5 km , 1hour30, easy.

This tidal-powered mill was built upriver on the Rance sea inlet in the 15th century. Its paddle wheels finally stopped turning in about 1930. Now fully restored it houses an exhibition on grains, milling techniques through the ages and demonstrations of traditional working mills. €2.00 per person. Contact:02 96 87 69 70.

Singers and actors re-create the ambience of the Belle Epoque throughout the streets of Quintin for the town's Buskers Festival. This festival is held at the same time as the Saint-Martin fair, which dates back to the 15th century. Visitors can try local delicacies such as cod fricasse, roasted chestnuts, crepes and cider whilst listening to singers and strolling players covering Breton songs.

Saint-Carne was called "Seint Karnaya" in the 12th century and has quite a rich historical heritage - the Crosses of "L'Ourmee" and Le Chesne-Ferron from the Middle Ages, those of Le Chaffaux and "La Touche" from the 18th century and the "Pont-Roux" from the 17th century. The village itself is picturesque with its 17th century "Loges" houses and the Chateau du Chesne-Ferron (15th-17th century). There is also the Pont Perrin lock-gate by the Ille-et-Rance canal.

Taden is situated on the historic Roman way from Corseul to Avranches and offers a rich cultural and natural heritage. Next to the 14th century Church of St.-Pierre stands the tomb of Claude Toussaint Marot de la Garaye, seigneurial lord here in the 18th century. Nearby is the 14th century "Manoir de la Grand'Cour" where events and exhibitions are organized in high season. Head down towards the Rance. In front of you stretches the "plaine de Taden" surrounded by hills and copses. Treguier, former episcopal town and home to Saint-Yves and the writer Renan, offers those who love old buildings some beautiful examples of historic architecture. Accessible on foot or by car at low tide it becomes an island again at high tide. In the past, it was populated by many "Callotins". At the beginning of the century, farming, fishing and seaweed gathering were the main activities. At low tide, some fishermen would go to the continent to sell their products at local markets. The island was at that time self-sufficient, up until twenty years ago, Callot still had its own school, opened in 1936. Mainly composed of small creeks, dunes, gorse, fields and grass, Callot spreads over 3 km in length and is between 15 and 300 m wide. The beautiful little chapel of Notre Dame de Callot built on the highest spot of the island and open to visitors is said to date back to the early 5th century.

Standing on the end of a steep rocky islet, the thin white figure of the lighthouse is one of the standard pictures of the Breton coasts. The light range sits 16m above the high equinoctial tides. The first lighting took place on the night between 31st March and 1st April 1860. Today, the lighthouse is automated. The keeper's house has been closed and the island is not accessible at low tide. The best spots to see the lighthouse: from the coast, at the nearest, on Pen al Lann headland. In summer, from a cruise boat (excursion at sea departing from Carantec).

La Lande lighthouse is situated on the heights of the Bay of Morlaix. It discreetly fits into the surrounding wooded landscape. It towers at 19.10m above land level and 87m above sea level, which makes it the highest lighthouse in Europe. It was lit for the first time in December 1845. Its white flash every 5 seconds is lit by a 650 W lamp. It can be seen from a distance of 23 nautical miles (about 42,5 Km). It is automated. There is no keeper and it cannot be visited. However, you may still enjoy beautiful walks towards the La Lande lighthouse starting from Le Frout.

The Chateau du Taureau will be open from 4th april, 2009. The visit lasts 2 hours from Carantec embarking is at Kelenn beach. The ornithological reserve of the islets of the bay of Morlaix was created in 1962 to preserve puffins and terns. Today, it is an important nesting place where around 60 000 birds winter (marine and sea-side species) thanks to the richness and variety of the sea bed. Birds can be watched with binoculars from the coast or on board a craft (in summer, excursions at sea are available with departures from Carantec). Information at Tourist Office.

It is a public park, situated on the headland of Pen al Lann, open all year round and hosting remarkable tree species. From the terrace enjoy a wonderful panoramic view over the Bay of Morlaix and the oyster farms. A treasure hunt for children is available from the Tourist Information Centre.

Built in the XV Century it was transformed at the end of the XIX century for Princess Zenaïde Narischkine, aunt to Tsar Nicolas II. Completed in 1894, the lighthouse is located 1.5km north east of the point of Corsen delimiting the Atlantic ocean from the Channel. This ancient friar’s chapel was part of the Ambon parish. When the Damgan parish was created in 1820, before it became a ‘commune’ (district) in 1824, Damgan with its swelling population sought to become an independent parish in its own right. St Pierre's chapel was built as a ‘chapel of ease’ on 2 August 1843 but has always belonged to the parish of Damgan. Situated right next to the port, the chapel is well worth visiting.

The chapel dates from 1846, and was built on the site of another chapel that had existed between 1677 and 1807. This chapel fell into ruins during the French Revolution, and a customs building called Sainte Lucie was built in its place using the original stone. Tel: 02 97 41 11 32.

A former stopping-point on the pilgrimage to Compostella, the small town of Malestroit was founded in 987. It first enters the history books in 1343 for being the site of the (illusory) Truce of Malestroit, signed in the Chapelle de la Madeleine during the 100 Years War. This started the town's expansion, with small half-timbered shops and large houses for the middle class, made of sculpted granite, springing up during the Middle Ages. The curious polychrome sculptures attached to the Oriel-fronted buildings also date from this period. And, if you look closely enough, at 15:00 it is possible to see the statue of the ox casting a shadow in the shape of Voltaire's profile on the walls of the surprising St.-Gilles Church.

This sight houses one of the largest sets of standing stones in inland Brittany - 420 monoliths have been recorded, 42 of which were returned to their standing position after archaeological digs. On 3rd September 1939, France declared war on Germany. the Germans entered Ploermel and Pontivy on 18 June 1940, 20th Vannes and 21st June Lorient. A period of unrest followed. This disused railway line has been designated for walkers since June 2002. Its construction began in 1747 on request of a British governor to assure the liberty of communication to Belle-Ile. This fort was occupied in 1795 by the "Chouans", who tried to reconstitute the royalty with the help of the English who had emigrated to France. It was reconquered by the republican troops of General Hoche and was the theatre of slaughter. This episode is known under the name "L'Affaire de Quiberon". In 1944, 59 patriots were tortured and executed in this place. A granite monument graced by a Lorraine cross was established in remembrance of the resistants. Today this bastion is in possession of the Ministry of Defence and the third R.I. of the Navy is located in it. You can only visit the outside.

This point reaches out into the sea in the form of a cross, and is the first of many points which jut out each one more dramatic than the other. La Pointe de Dinan, this rocky promotory covered in moor and heathland has a panoramic view of the Cap de la Chèvre, Bay of Douarnenez, la Pointe de Penhir. A large crayfish fishing harbour. Nearby, la pointe de Penhir strectches westwards, its white cliffs reaching into the sea in large scattered mounds (les Tas de Pois). Try and see Camaret which sits in a splendid cove sheltered by the rocky outcrops of the peninsula.

The end of a mythical world, this long, narrow, rocky outcrop stands 70m tall above the water and stretches into the sea as a chain of coral reefs. Once damaged by human folly, the site has been given the chance to regain some of it's natural beauty and now offers visitors a new look which is free from any signs of civilisation. Don't miss the Vieille Lighthouse on the last rock, facing the Island of Sein. It keeps watch over the busiest channel in Europe, the Raz de Sein.

South from la Pointe du Raz, admire an unusual group of dunes, marshes and ponds. Scattered along the route, you will find stone crosses, old granite farms and pretty chapels and calvaries. In springtime, you can stop to enjoy the tulip fields of La Pointe de la Torche, a world famous surf spot. Don't miss the ruins of the chapel of Languidou and it's mysterious rosette.

This rocky mass anchored in the heart of Finistère is home to 3 sites - Le Mont Saint-Michel of Brasparts, a hill, that is a Mecca for Celtic culture and is crowned by an unusual chapel - a protector of souls wandering the marshland below. The small village of Brennilis and Yeun Ellez are at the heart of certain celtic legends. This marsh, today hidden beneath Brennilis lake, is said to hold one of the gates to Hell. The centuries have done nothing to change this strange area and Yeun Ellez is still shrouded in mystery. Last, is le Roc'h Trévézel, a rocky slope of the Monts d'Arrée, this mountain summit, which is ten times older than the Alps and measures 384 metres at its highest point has an outstanding panoramic view.

Built under Napoléon in the XIXth century, the Nantes to Brest canal was built to connect the arsenals of the two towns inland to overcome the maritime blockage imposed by the English. Today this waterway is a way to discover the very heart of Brittany and the countryside with it's multitude of landscapes. Enjoy the calm as you glide past green scenery and pretty locks. Moor up on one of the many towpaths which line the canal to explore the villages nearby, and take the time to discover the local gastronomy. Don't miss Port Launay with it's pretty flowered quayside.

Watching over the Crozon Peninsula, Menez-Hom towers 330 metres above the end of Brittany. From its summit you can enjoy the panoramic view of the Bay of Douarnenez, Brest harbour and the mouth of the River Aulne. Don't miss the Chapel of Sainte Marie du Ménez Hom set in the center.

Renowned as one of the prettiest rivers in France, the Odet originates in the Montagnes Noires, in the heart of Finistère, and flows through Quimper to finally join the ocean in Bénodet. Ramblers can follow the pathways to discover forests and magnificent manor houses, and also to observe the impressive local flora and fauna. In springtime the mountains of blooming purple rhododendrons make a breathtaking site. Follow the pathways which line the banks of the river, to discover old water mills, manor houses and splendid views.

In addition to the religious fervour to which they bear witness, the parish enclosures retrace the history of the local economy and the artistic wealth of Breton architecture. Wander from one to another and discover architectural masterpieces such as Lampaul Guimiliau, Guimiliau...Don't miss Saint-Thégonnec, the most imposing parish enclosure in Finistère which marks the peak of religious architecture in Brittany.

The Island of Batz is a huge vegetable garden where organic farming has become a speciality of the island's farmers who use kelp for fertiliser. Discover the trees and exotic flowers in the garden Georges-Delaselle. Unwind on Pors Aliou, Farah Diba, Pors An Iliz, Bildivik or Grève blanche beaches. Get some fresh air as you discover the island on foot or horseback. It's easy to discover the area on foot. Bikes are permitted but cars are prohibited.

This archipelago is located 11 miles off the coast and forms part of the Fouesnant area. It includes 7 islands which form the region's only lagoon. Only the island of Saint-Nicolas can be accessed by the public. Take the coastal path and admire the wonderful view of the coast which stretches from Penmarc'h to Pouldu. Discover the Glénan narcissus when you visit the island in the Spring.
